The volunteers who care for the homeless dogs and cats at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA share the sorrow and grieving that Jerry and Diane are going through at this time.

This morning Jasper, their family dog of many years who was failing, passed over The Rainbow Bridge.

It is always a very hard decision to make for our loved ones when their time comes - made even harder at Christmastime.

Jerry says, "She fought a long hard fight, and could not fight any more”.

Rest in Peace, Jasper, Dear Little Animal Companion and Family Friend.

Pippi Longstocking, John Boy, and Annie Oakley - rescued by the Lynchburg Couple

Some sad news to report today. Pippi Longstocking passed over The Rainbow Bridge yesterday, July 26, 2007. AWARE is deeply mourning her loss. Pippi was Annie Oakley's daughter. We are very sorry for the loss of this young kitty gal and wish AWARE our deepest condolences.

As you can see, Big John (aka John Boy) loves the warm weather we're having today, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006.

Pippi also likes the warm sun on her. She and her mother Annie also like to hang out in the basement, where there are lots of places to explore and hide.

John Boy, now Big John, is almost 15 pounds. Dan and I transported them on Tues., Dec. 5, 2006 to Lovingston, VA, where they were very happily accepted by the Lynchburg couple for their cat sanctuary.
The CASPCA is very grateful and lucky to have these wonderful folks who save so many cats. Thank you AWARE.

Hoppy 20109 has Passed Over The Rainbow Bridge

UPDATE: I am very sorry to report that Hoppy Passed Over The Rainbow Bridge. She was found early the next day and passed away peacefully during her sleep. We are very sorry for Debbie's loss. Know Dear Hoppy that you were deeply loved at the time of your passing. HOPPY WAS ADOPTED ON FRI., 09/15/06, INTO THE SAME FAMILY WHERE LADY FINGERS AND LADY EBONY ARE LIVING. HOPPY WAS VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF, AND WE WERE ALL VERY HAPPY FOR HER.

Hoppy has a sad story to tell, she was found as a stray with an injured rear leg. She is being nursed back to health by shelter staff and with extra TLC is well on the road to recovery. She is loving and enjoys petting and attention. Hoppy would prefer a quiet household. Hoppy was adopted from Purrin' at Pantops.

One of the Original Purrin' Kittens has Passed Over The Rainbow Bridge

Dear Sweet Apollo has passed over The Rainbow Bridge.

Apollo (Jack) had eaten lily leaves from a dried Thanksgiving flower arrangement and had to be hospitalized. He died in the hospital from the lily poisoning, which is almost always fatal.

This is Apollo through the months at Purrin' and in his adoptive home.

Apollo had a very nice life with his adoptive family and is very much missed by all.

Hans Has Passed Over The Rainbow Bridge, WCB #76

I am deeply saddened to report that our big, beautiful, and beloved Maine Coon cat, Hans, has passed over The Rainbow Bridge. The veterinarian's office called on Wednesday morning to report that he had passed away overnight.


Hans did not want to eat, and Jan tried fostering him. Hans was taken to the vet's office as he was very ill. Hans had been someone's beloved pet until he was surrendered to the CASPCA recently. Hans will be greatly missed. It was just his time. He was sick.


Know that you were deeply loved at the time of your passing, Dear Hans.

Lynchburg, VA former Purrin' Cats Updates

I am thrilled to be able to post the new photos from the nice couple who adopted our Purrin' cats. It is quite evident that the cats are doing extremely well, and they are loved and appreciated by the kind folks who adopted them.

MICKEY AND MURPHY (see the kitty door).

Mickey is always right in the middle of everything, but she doesn't like other cats, so she is always fussing at them. This is normal, and she will eventually get over this. She prefers to be inside for now.

Virginia stays in one of our bedrooms either in the closet or under the bed. She is very relaxed here and loves to be petted.

Update: Sadly, Virginia passed over The Rainbow Bridge. She was very ill, and there was nothing that could be done to save her. Rest in Peace, little Virginia. Know that you were loved very much by the Lynchburg couple in the final days of your life.

Murphy has a number of hiding spots in the basement, but she only comes out and moves around when we're not there. She doesn't let us pet her, but with time she will eventually come around.

Curry has been loose for 9 days now.

She hangs around by Enclosure #2

(where we kept her and Sister Sylvia originally)

and likes to be around the other cats. She is not afraid of us, just cautious.

We kept Angelina and Rayna in Enclosure #1 until yesterday morning.

Angelina checked out the surroundings and some of the other cats before going into the woods. She showed up after it got dark to eat.

Rayna went right into the woods. We will probably see her also in the next couple days.

Goodbye Blackie the Cat

I learned today that Blackie is gone. I will no longer put out fresh food and water daily for Blackie.


I am saddened by this. Blackie was struck by a car and passed over the Rainbow Bridge. I felt like I knew this cat. I had seen it many times outside. I thought the food and water was not being touched lately.
I also noticed the Daycare School down the block has been putting out food and water, so I guess they were feeding Blackie too.
Know, Dear Blackie, that people loved and cared about you for the short time we knew you.

Marshmallow has crossed over The Rainbow Bridge - We are very sad.

Marshmallow was a quiet, large, mostly white Calico. She was an owner-surrendered cat.

I think Jan said it best:

"When her previous owners brought her in to the shelter, they said it was because of their baby being allergic to her...and did NOT want to be called if she was euthanized. (SO, they knew when they brought her in, that she was sick, but they took the easy way out.) With the state of her condition, this just did not start since she was brought into the shelter."

I sat on the floor and held her last week. She wanted to be petted and brushed. The last time I saw Marshmallow she was laying on the kitty sofa and looking out the window. She was out of her cage, and I thought she was truely on the road to recovery.

We wrongly felt Marshmallow needed to get up and move around a little - "all she does is lay on her bed", we commented. We thought she had arthritis and needed to lose some weight.

After being examined by Dr. Hay, we found out she was in renal kidney failure, she had a urinary infection along with it, and her liver was giving out too. Her abdomen was swollen from fluid build-up, plus she had been in pain for some time, we believe. That is why she did not want to move around, and here we were all trying to get her to move about some. Sadly, we didn't realize she was very sick.

This is what she looked like - only a little bigger. If we could have known her at another point in time, things may have been different for her. We will miss you, Marshmallow. Rest in peace little girl. Know that in the final days of your life, you were loved.

Alice has passed over the Rainbow Bridge. We are so sad.

Update: Alice passed over the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 from kidney failure. We are so saddened by the unexpected death of such a beautiful little girl whom we only knew a short time at Purrin'. This was such a sudden passing that no one even knew she was that sick.
I will always remember the way you used to climb all the way to the top of the cabinet, way, way up high.
I am sorry you were so sick. I hope you did not have to suffer. Please say hello to Dr. Seuss when you get to heaven.
We loved you Alice. We will all miss you.

Dr. Seuss AKA Malone has crossed over The Rainbow Bridge

Today, we celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss AKA Malone who passed over The Rainbow Bridge yesterday while being operated on for his hind leg/hip limp. All of us associated with the CASPCA are very saddened by this loss and will miss him greatly. He loved to play with Prince Charming and romp around, and he was so cute. We noticed the other day when Dr. Seuss was first taken from Purrin' that Prince Charming was looking for him.

He was a very nice cat who has been through a lot in his life. I think this makes his passing even harder to accept. He came into the shelter in need of medical care, as he was attacked by a dog and walked with a severe hind leg limp. Dr. Seuss was in need of an operation to correct his hip. Nick and Rena were fostering him in their home before his operation and this was to follow after his operation. He was a sweet soul. He enjoyed being rubbed and used to roll over for attention. He appreciated petting and used to knead kitty biscuits as a sign of his love.

He would have made a very nice animal companion. We are all grieving his loss and miss him terribly. Goodbye, Dr. Seuss . Know that you were loved while you were with us.
